Price the transfer
Multiply the transferred balance by the fee percentage and apply any minimum fee. Confirm whether the fee uses available credit.
Calculate the opening cost. Add the transfer fee to the balance that must be repaid and confirm whether the fee consumes part of the available credit. Leave room for interest or charges that can arrive from the old account after transfer.
Build a payoff target
Divide the transferred balance plus fee by promotional months, leaving room before expiration. Compare that target with realistic cash flow.
Set an early payoff target. Divide the transferred amount and fee across fewer months than the promotion allows. The buffer protects against processing delays, a missed transfer date or one month when the planned payment is not possible.
Check purchase treatment
New purchases may use a different rate or lose a grace period. Keep spending separate unless the disclosure clearly supports the plan.
Keep new purchases out of the test. Read the purchase APR and grace-period rules before using the same card for spending. A clean comparison keeps the transferred balance separate and models any remainder at the later APR.
Because purchases and transferred balances can receive different treatment, check the underlying credit card agreement for grace periods, payment allocation and post-promotion pricing.
Plan the remaining balance
Record the post-promotion APR and how payments are allocated. Model the cost if only part of the balance is repaid.
Turn the promotion into a dated payoff plan
A promotional rate is useful only when the transfer fee, available limit, monthly target and post-promotion balance fit together. Put them on one timeline before moving the debt.

Build the deadline file
Timing rights fail when the date, notice rule and delivery proof live in different places. Put them in one working file and calculate backward from the controlling event.
For this decision, the first working threshold is concrete: Transfer fee calculated; Deadline recorded; Credit limit sufficient.
Read those checks beside the sections on Price the transfer, Build a payoff target, Check purchase treatment. Completing one item does not cure a mismatch elsewhere, so leave the decision open until the record is internally consistent.
Assign every unresolved row an owner and a date for receiving the missing document so it cannot disappear in the rush to sign.
| Timing control | Record to preserve | Written confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer fee calculated | Copy the dollar amount or rate, its source page, what it includes and the condition that can change it. | When must the transfer complete? |
| Deadline recorded | Record the exact date, lead time, delivery rule and proof that notice was sent or received. | What rate applies afterward? |
| Credit limit sufficient | Copy the dollar amount or rate, its source page, what it includes and the condition that can change it. | How are payments allocated? |
| Payoff target affordable | Record the trigger, calculation, notice method, effective date and written confirmation of the exit result. | Does a late payment end the promotion? |
| Purchase APR checked | Copy the dollar amount or rate, its source page, what it includes and the condition that can change it. | When must the transfer complete? |
| Post-offer APR modeled | Copy the dollar amount or rate, its source page, what it includes and the condition that can change it. | What rate applies afterward? |
Calendar an earlier personal deadline when delivery or processing time matters. Keep the notice and proof together instead of relying on a sent-message screen alone.
