Dealer Add-Ons: How to Price the Real Cost

The sales price of an add-on is only the first cost. If it is financed, the loan rate and term turn it into a larger obligation.

Use a dealer add-ons checklist to compare optional car products by cash price, financed cost, overlap, exclusions and cancellation terms.

Ask whether it is truly optional

Request the cash price and written coverage. If a seller says a product is required by the lender, verify directly with the lender and ask where the requirement appears.

Demand the contract before deciding. A menu name is not coverage. Review provider, term, exclusions, claim procedure, deductible, transfer and cancellation language. Compare those terms with existing warranty, insurance or membership benefits.

Price the add-on with loan interest

An add-on included in the amount financed accrues interest. Use the loan calculator with and without the product and compare total paid, not only the payment change.

Calculate financed cost. If the product enters the loan, estimate the payment change, scheduled interest and total repayment attributable to it. A small monthly increase can hide a much larger complete cost.

Check overlap and exclusions

Compare the product with manufacturer warranty, insurance and benefits you already have. Read claim limits, covered causes, waiting periods and required maintenance.

Verify acceptance and removal. Mark accepted and declined products on the buyer's order and credit contract. If canceling later, record how the refund is calculated, whether it goes to the lender and whether the monthly payment remains unchanged.

Read cancellation mechanics

Record the deadline, method, fee and where any refund goes. A refund applied to principal may not automatically lower the scheduled monthly payment.

Where the complete cost usually changes

List each product separately with its full cash price.

Is this product optional, and can it be removed without changing the quoted financing?

Obtain the coverage contract before deciding.

Who administers claims and what events are excluded?

Read exclusions, claim procedures and cancellation terms.

How is an unearned refund calculated and applied if I cancel or repay early?

Evaluate each product as a separate purchase

An add-on should earn its place without help from the vehicle sale or loan. Ask what it costs in cash, what it covers and what happens when it is financed or canceled.

Amounts to reconcile with the written total

  • List each product separately with its full cash price.
  • Obtain the coverage contract before deciding.
  • Read exclusions, claim procedures and cancellation terms.
  • Calculate interest when the product is financed.
  • Confirm declined products do not appear in the final buyer's order or loan.

Questions that separate price from sales framing

  • Is this product optional, and can it be removed without changing the quoted financing?
  • Who administers claims and what events are excluded?
  • How is an unearned refund calculated and applied if I cancel or repay early?

Reconcile the complete cost

Keep price, financing, credits and later-triggered charges separate until every amount can be traced. This prevents a lower payment or net figure from hiding a higher obligation.

For this decision, the first working threshold is concrete: List each product separately with its full cash price.; Obtain the coverage contract before deciding.; Read exclusions, claim procedures and cancellation terms..

Read those checks beside the sections on Ask whether it is truly optional, Price the add-on with loan interest, Check overlap and exclusions. Completing one item does not cure a mismatch elsewhere, so leave the decision open until the record is internally consistent.

Assign every unresolved row an owner and a date for receiving the missing document so it cannot disappear in the rush to sign.

Recalculate the total after every revision. A credit can reduce cash due without reducing the balance, and an optional financed item can add both principal and interest.
