Map the loss calculation
Identify the insurer payment basis, deductible, remaining loan balance and which unpaid amounts the GAP product excludes.
Build an illustrative loss. Choose a future month, estimate the loan payoff and compare it with a conservative vehicle settlement. Then apply deductible treatment, benefit caps, loan-to-value limits and excluded amounts from the actual contract.
Check eligibility limits
Review maximum loan-to-value, vehicle age or use, loan term, late payments, negative equity and optional products.
Find balances outside the benefit. Check negative equity, late charges, skipped payments, service products, taxes and other financed items. A product called GAP may not cover every dollar included in the credit balance.
Compare purchase channels
Price dealer, lender and insurer options separately. If financed, add interest to the product’s quoted price.
Compare sources and exit terms. Review insurer, lender and dealer options for price, term and limits. If financing the product, include interest. Read cancellation and refund treatment after payoff, refinance or sale.
Read cancellation and refund
Check the free-look period, cancellation method, prorating and whether a refund is sent to you or credited to the loan.
Ask what the clause does in practice
- Does it cover the insurance deductible?
- Is rolled-in negative equity excluded?
- What is the maximum benefit?
- How is an early-payoff refund calculated?
Test GAP against the balance it may actually cover
GAP can address part of the difference between a covered total-loss settlement and eligible loan balance. The contract decides which balances, charges and events count.
Language to mark in the agreement
- Benefit formula read
- Exclusions matched to loan
- Price with interest calculated
- Other sources compared
- Cancellation method saved
- Refund recipient known

Mark the actual wording first, then write what event activates it, who controls that event and what money, right or asset is affected. Do not summarize from memory.
For this decision, the first working threshold is concrete: Benefit formula read; Exclusions matched to loan; Price with interest calculated.
Read those checks beside the sections on Map the loss calculation, Check eligibility limits, Compare purchase channels. Completing one item does not cure a mismatch elsewhere, so leave the decision open until the record is internally consistent.
Assign every unresolved row an owner and a date for receiving the missing document so it cannot disappear in the rush to sign.
| Clause control | Wording or attachment to save | Practical question |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit formula read | Save the declarations, controlling policy wording and every endorsement that adds, removes or limits protection. | Does it cover the insurance deductible? |
| Exclusions matched to loan | Save the declarations, controlling policy wording and every endorsement that adds, removes or limits protection. | Is rolled-in negative equity excluded? |
| Price with interest calculated | Copy the dollar amount or rate, its source page, what it includes and the condition that can change it. | What is the maximum benefit? |
| Other sources compared | Mark the controlling page or source, its version date, the responsible party and any exception that changes the result. | How is an early-payoff refund calculated? |
| Cancellation method saved | Record the trigger, calculation, notice method, effective date and written confirmation of the exit result. | Does it cover the insurance deductible? |
| Refund recipient known | Record the trigger, calculation, notice method, effective date and written confirmation of the exit result. | Is rolled-in negative equity excluded? |
Read defined terms and referenced attachments with the clause. A negotiated limit matters only when the final signed version states it clearly and consistently.
